Right now, an estimated 600,000 people are living with or after a breast cancer diagnosis in the UK. And every year we lose over 11,500 lives to the disease. That’s someone every 45 minutes. The mission at Breast Cancer Now is to not stop until everyone diagnosed with breast cancer lives – and is supported to live well.
By funding almost 360 of the brightest minds in breast cancer research, they’re discovering how we can save lives and live well with breast cancer. Giving us the power to drive forward on a global stage.
To date, the charity has already invested £243 million in breast cancer research – and are not about to stop. Right now, they’re funding around 80 cutting-edge projects across the UK worth just over £29 million.
By using Impact to collect feedback from service users that gauges their ability to manage the side effects of breast cancer treatment before and after interacting with their services, the charity is able to more accurately measure improvements in users’ quality of life and ability to self-manage.
As part of their groundbreaking initiatives into the research and understanding of breast cancer, the charity conduct a large number of surveys with their service users. Historically, this was done on paper, using spreadsheets to analyse results. But as the charity grew and expanded, this took up an increasingly large amount of resource which could be better spent supporting their service users.
The charity also relies on an army of volunteers to support its various campaigns, support groups, events and activities, however, they struggled in accurately tracking the hours of their volunteers in an easy and efficient manner.
Breast Cancer Now began the search for a new platform. Their requirements were two-fold; they needed a dependable, scalable survey solution that could automatically analyse and interpret both qualitative and quantitative data, and a place where their volunteers could log their activity contributions and hours.
The charity had a natural affinity to Impact as a pro-social organisation and after reviewing multiple platforms, the organisation landed on Impact as its new survey solution.
The team at Impact have worked with us closely to scope requirements and ensure the product met and continues to meet our needs. They’re really friendly, open to ideas and keen to suggest and make improvements to our existing practices wherever possible.
“With Impact, our managers can focus on service improvement work with live evaluation data instead of having to rely on spreadsheet-based records and additional paperwork“
Sally Hudson, Business Support Manager
Deployment of Impact
To date, Impact has been deployed across five UK-wide Breast Cancer Now support services aimed at those diagnosed, living with or moving forward from breast cancer, including groups aimed at younger women and those diagnosed with secondary, incurable, breast cancer.
By using impact to collect feedback from service users before and after interacting with Breast Cancer Now’s services, the charity can focus on its ability to support its users in managing the side effects of treatment and more accurately measure the improvements in quality of life.
With Impact, the team at Breast Cancer Now can craft surveys that go beyond traditional data capture, to get a true sense and understanding of what service users are feeling, struggling with and worrying about living with breast cancer.
Instead of having to manually analyse the results of their surveys, Breast Cancer Now get a real-time understanding of the success of their activities and campaigns. This enables the charity to demonstrate the effectiveness of different support models to the NHS and help transform care for people affected by breast cancer.
Surveys are simple to put together and distribute, plus their easy brand-ability gives service users increased confidence. Since rolling out Impact to our volunteers, we have seen an increase in logging and reporting volunteering activities that massively contribute towards our impact generation goals.
