Helpforce: The future of NHS volunteering
“Impact Reporting is really user-friendly and is quick to use because data can be entered regularly. It also captures feedback from volunteers directly after their shift, if they choose to provide comments”.
HELPFORCE PROJECT MANAGER
Helpforce is a non-profit organisation devoted to improving the lives of NHS staff, patients and communities through the power of volunteering.
It is a national programme, designed to promote the role and value of volunteering within hospitals and deliver volunteer-centred innovation and improvement across the UK. The organisation’s ultimate aim is to make volunteering an integral part of everyone’s health and wellbeing.

The Challenge: Volunteer Measurement
Volunteers make a difference in many ways – to staff, patients, to communities, and to themselves.
The power of giving is unique. Helpforce are working with partners, and others in the volunteering movement, to measure some of the innovative new ways volunteers are making a real difference.
Impact was introduced to support how Helpforce captures and measures the impact of volunteering in the NHS.
Impact: The Solution
Impact provides a central database for volunteer data and insight for NHS trusts involved in the HelpForce programme.
Impact Reporting allows NHS Trusts to understand the difference their volunteer services make to patients, staff and communities. Data, such as the number of patients supported, can be entered directly into Impact by a volunteer or staff member via a phone, tablet or computer, and is therefore uploaded quickly and automatically as an alternative to paper forms.
This data is then processed and converted into real outcomes – such as reduced patient anxiety, staff time saved, and more productive services.
Impact and Healthcare
Impact is the most efficient and affordable way for healthcare providers to capture, analyse and report on their social impact and sustainability.
NHS Trusts can reduce manual monitoring and measurement data analysis by using the power of automation to consolidate and present key outputs and outcomes about their volunteering service.
Through data entered into Impact, NHS Trusts can gain a better understanding of how their volunteering service make a difference to service users whilst stimulating ongoing improvements.
NHS Trusts can empower and engage their volunteers, and improve the completeness and richness of insights captured, by offering volunteers the opportunity to enter data into Impact themselves.
Impact supplies NHS trusts and
Helpforce with reports and dashboards
that are up-to-date. This enables NHS
teams to demonstrate the impact of
their volunteers in real-time.
